Literally, " Florentine hills" north of Chianti Classico,
in the province of Florence.
In 1984 Chianti was upgraded to DOCG, whiche
adjusted the blanding formula to include a minimum of only 2 percent
white grapes and allowed foreign varieties such as cabernet and
merlot to be included in percentages up to 10 percent (in 1996 it
changed again, eliminating the minimum for white grapes and upping
the amount of foreingn grapes to 15 percent). Further, the DOCG
placed tighter restrictions on yields in the vineyards, essentially
forcing people to cut excess fruit in the summer to produce more
concentrated grapes.
